Autumn Term 2017

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to school. I hope you all had a restful holiday and are ready for the new year. This term Oak Class is lucky to be welcoming Mr Gould to join our team to work alongside Mrs Cotton supporting the children’s learning.
On Thursday September 21st you are invited to a welcome meeting for parents from 8:45 to 9:30 where we hope to clarify some common questions about how we get your child ready for Secondary School. We will have information about the Maths and English curriculum and also the expectations we have of the children. Parents meetings for the other classes will follow, so if you have children in different classes you can see how it changes as they progress through school.
Our approach to teaching phonics and reading is this: Pupils will have regular independent reading time, and for some, this will be with an adult. We aim to develop reading stamina so the children can tackle more complex texts, and all children are expected to read daily at home as well. All children will do a small group guided reading session with an adult twice each week, and we are having a focus on spelling this year, to assist the children to meet the high standards expected with the New Curriculum.
Homework will be given out on Friday, to be handed in on the following Monday morning. It is very important that this is done because it consolidates the work done during their school week and is part of getting pupils Secondary ready. Homework Club is run by Miss Webb-Ingall at lunchtime on a Friday for Key Stage Two if you wish to take advantage of that facility. Your child may not be able to complete everything in this time, but will hopefully been able to clarify anything they are unsure of in that time. You will notice that homework will contain details of a Maths and Literacy target, in order that you can assist your child's learning at home. Spellings and Maths tests will usually be on Thursday mornings.
PE will be on Tuesday and Friday afternoon. Please remember labeled kit for these days, including appropriate footwear for both outdoor and indoor games. Indeed, all school uniform should be clearly marked to avoid a mountain of lost property.
Yours Sincerely

Mrs Scott and Mrs Beaven
